The Japanese Written Language (Nihongo, 日本語)
Japanese is the first language of approximately 130 million people.
Japan’s distinctive culture is displayed not only through it’s foreign policy, customs, food and etiquette but also through the Japanese language. Different grammar and different words are used to address different audiences. Differences in societal status, gender and age will have a bearing on how that persons speaks to reflect his or her status in society.
Japanese has an extremely complicated writing system. The Japanese writing system can be traced back to the 4th century AD and the introduction of Chinese writing (kanji). Because kanji could not represent all the elements of the Japanese language, hiragana and katakana were created in the 12th century. Hiragana and katakana are two sets of phonetic syllabaries (containing approximately 50 syllables in each). Today a 4th script (rōmaji – Roman script) has been adopted into the Japanese written language.
Kanji are used to write nouns, including proper names, and stems of adjectives and verbs;
Hiragana is used to write inflectional endings for adjectives and verbs, various grammatical particles, words for which there are no kanji, and some high frequency words;
Katakana is mostly used to write loanwords;
Rōmaji is used to write Arabic numerals, international units of measurement, and acronyms. The Internet has accelerated its spread.
